New Patient FAQ

What is acupuncture and what does it treat?

Acupuncture is the manipulation of the vital energy of the body through the placement of very fine sterile needles in strategic points along the energy meridians and channels of the body.  Once the root cause of a condition is determined, acupuncture can effectively and safely address any symptom or disease presented.  Acupuncture treatments are enhanced and supported by herbal medicine, dietary alterations and lifestyle changes.  Each case requires a different combination of these modalities that are customized for each patient.  In every case the treatment strives to restore balance among the systems of the body to allow it to once again heal itself.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

At your first treatment, the acupuncturist will ask questions to evaluate all the systems of the body and how they are working.  Next the pulse will be evaluated and then the tongue (please don’t brush your tongue before and be sure to eat something); each are important diagnostic tools and tell us a great deal about what is going on inside the body.  At this point the practitioner formulates a treatment and begins gently placing the needles.  The needles typically remain in place for 20-30 minutes before removal.  In some cases, the treatment will involve a front and back treatment.

How does it work?

No one can answer that question with true certainty.  There are many theories; too many to list here.  It  basically affects the nervous system and causes changes in the energy of the body; or the qi.  When a needle is placed in the body, the body detects an intruder and energy goes to that area of the body.  Once there, the body evaluates what it needs and acts accordingly.  The needles merely bring attention to the area so that the body can repair itself as it was meant to.  Regular acupuncture is very effective at keeping the body balanced to prevent adverse conditions from developing.

How many treatments will I need?

It depends entirely on the condition being treated.  Acute conditions typically are resolved in only a few treatments, sometimes just one.  Chronic conditions typically require a series of treatments but often some improvement is detected after just one or two treatments.

This was my first experience with acupuncture. Brenda was very professional and took time explaining a treatment plan and expected results. She answered all of my questions and made it a positive experience. I must admit I was a bit uncertain but now understand the many benefits of acupuncture treatment.
